Merrybells are among the first natives toemerge in the spring, delighting viewers with beautiful evidence that winter has finally gone. A cluster of shoots push up through the ground and bear delicate leaves and flowers with a unique nodding posture, arching gracefully towards the ground. The flowers have long, pale-yellow petals that twist and flare slightly, calling to mind a billowy skirt mid-spin. Pollinators, especially native solitary bees, appreciate this early source of nectar and pollen at a time when very little of these precious resources are available. After pollination and seed-setting, the stems straighten up and showcase the delicate manner in which they thread through the perfoliate leaves. A true gem of the woodland world and a stunning additon to your shady garden.
