Zigzag Goldenrod is named for the slightly wavy form its long stems take, winding their way back and forth a bit between alternate leaves. These large, dark green leaves have a wide, oval shape with serrated edges and play host to numerous species of moth caterpillars. In the late summer and fall, bright yellow flowers burst forth in small clusters along the top portions of the stems, providing nectar and pollen late in the season when such resources are scarce.Like all goldenrods, its pollen is heavy, sticky and cannot be wind-borne, so it is not to blame for seasonal allergies. Spreads easily via rhizome and so should be used thoughtfully in small garden spaces.
