Silene regia-Royal Catchfly

Royal Catchfly gets its name from the sticky glands that cover its sepals and “catch” small insects that might otherwise harm the plant. Larger pollinators are not only undeterred but very much attracted by the numerous brilliant red flowers that crown this rare but easily grown native. Five narrow petals flare outward from a deep tubular center, beckoning to passing hummingbirds and butterflies, notably the Black Swallowtail. Pairs of opposite leaves grace the bottom half of tall stems that erupt in riotous color towards the top. This showy plant self-seeds but not at all aggressively. May need staking if not supported by neighboring plants.
