Christmas Fern is named for its evergreen nature, lendingcolor and texture to the garden through the holiday season. In early spring, silvery fiddleheadsemerge from the ground in a rosette pattern and slowly unfurl into glossy, course textured fronds of a rich, dark green color. Fertile fronds are tallest and sport rows of spore cases on their undersides. Rhizomatic growth will gradually increase the clump size up to 2 ft wide as the years go by, but the fern will not spread in ground cover fashion. Needs well-drained soil to avoid crown rot. Willestablish well under Black Walnut trees. Drought-tolerant once established and resistant to deer-grazing.
