Riddell’s Goldenrod’s flat-topped clusters of tiny, brilliant yellow flowers enliven the late season garden for weeks on end, providing nectar and pollen when such resources are scarce. An ecological powerhouse, it attracts pollinators in droves, provides food for moth caterpillars through the summer and seeds for songbirds in the fall and winter. Its foliage is unique in the goldenrod family for the way its long, narrow leaves fold upwards slightly along their midvein, arch outwards and clasp the stem in an often-overlapping fashion.Like all goldenrods, its pollen is heavy, sticky and cannot be wind-borne, so it is not to blame for seasonal allergies. Unlike many if its close relatives, it is not an aggressive spreader and so can be planted with confidence in smaller garden spaces.
