Maianthemum racemosum-False Solomon's seal

False Solomon’s Seal sprouts unbranched stems that arch gracefully and bear alternate, deeply-veined oval leaves with pointed tips. In late spring, feathery terminal spikes of diminutive but impressive, creamy white flowers develop, attracting small bees and native beetles with their soft fragrance. Thus pollinated, they transform into a cluster of brilliant red berries that provide seasonal interest through the fall, if the songbirds they attract don’t get to them first. The plant’s preference is partial shade and while it can tolerate full sun, its leaves may wither at the height of summer in such light conditions. Spreads slowly via rhizome to create a colony but is not aggressive and will behave well in a small garden setting. An elegant choice for those tricky dry shade areas.
