Lythrum alatum- Winged Loosestrife

Winged Loosestrife’s upright stems bear alternate, lance-shaped leaves that give way to terminal spikes of star-shaped, vibrant pinkish purple flowers. Each flower has six protruding stamens and six petals with a slightly wrinkled, crushed linen look to them. These blooms attract a wide array of pollinators including bees, flies, butterflies and skippers. The stem has slightly raised projections that are said to resemble wings, helping to distinguish it from other species of Loosestrife. Lower stems are woody and remain year to year, while the upper stems are herbaceous.
