Bottle Gentian is a unique and lovely native whose clusters of flowers look like buds that are just about to open, and yet they never do. The deep blue or purple flowers are pollinated almost exclusively by bumblebees, who are big and strong enough to pry them open and reach the sweet nectar held inside the “bottle”. Happy is the gardener who catches the adorable sight of the back end of a bumblebee sticking out of the top of a bottle gentian flower! The plant boasts glossy green leaves that often have a purple tinge or spots. It is slow growing but easy to care for in moist soil.
