This tall, short-lived perennial is a cool season grower, greening up early in the season when temperatures are low and again in the fall when the heat of summer has subsided. Its long, terminal spikelets nod towards the ground and start out a bright green color in summer before transitioning to a golden tan. The seedheads have a wheat-like appearance and persist into the winter, swaying in the wind and providing multi-season interest. Its foliage provides food for numerous species of moth caterpillar, along with many insects.
