Carex frankii-Bristly Cattail Sedge

Bristly Cattail Sedge is a robust native that thrives in rain gardens, pond edges and seasonally flooded areas regardless of light conditions, as long as the soil remains moist. Its medium-wide leaves provide habitat for amphibians and beneficial insects along with the songbirds and water fowl that also feast on its seeds. One-inch long seedheads add textural contrast to the garden with their resemblance to spiky cattails, green when they first form in early summer before darkening to a tan and then rich brown color. Its dense, fibrous root system helps to stabilize soil and manage water runoff.
