Goat’s Beard has a commanding, structural presence in the shade garden, standing beautifully on its own as a specimen plant or providing a lush, tall background for shorter neighbors. It has a shrub-like form, growing as wide or even wider than it is tall, with dark green, serrated foliage and stunning, feathery plumes of cream-colored flowers. These showy white panicles cover the top of the plant in late spring and early summer, delighting viewers while attracting a wide variety of pollinators. As its Latin name suggests, this plant is dioecious, meaning individuals are either male or female. Female plants produce an equal abundance of flowers, but males have a fuller, more delicate bloom that results in a showier floral display.Goat’s Beard thrives in partial shade but can do well in full sun if the soil has consistently high moisture. Host plant for the Dusky Azure butterfly. Resistant to grazing by deer and rabbits.
