Allium canadense-Wild Garlic

Wild Garlic is the most common native species of onion in Illinois. You can distinguish it from other allium species by its ability to produce aerial bulblets that form before it flowers. Less showy than other allium species, with only a few starburst-shaped blooms flowering at a time. Its flowers range in color from white to purple in color and can be seen in May through July. It tolerates all but the wettest soil conditions and can help deter rabbits and deer with its oniony smell. It has been used in medicinal medications to control coughing and vomiting.
