Smooth Aster is a hardy and adaptable member of its genus, with smooth leaves that help differentiate it from its rough-leaved relatives. Its daisy-like flowers have lavender-blue petals and floral centers that start out yellow before darkening to a reddish color after pollination. This process is facilitated by butterflies, native bees and other beneficial insects who flock to this plant for the hard-to-find late season nectar it provides. This aster has even been known to continue blooming after an early frost or late fall snow, an unfortunately common occurrence in the Chicagoland area. The plant’s foliage plays host to the larvae of both the Silvery Checkerspot and the Pearl Crescent butterflies. While it does spread via rhizome, it is not as aggressive as some other asters can be.
