Sporobolus heterolepis-Prairie Dropseed

Prairie Dropseed is a beloved member of the grass family and a staple in the sunny native garden. Its narrow leaves grow upwards from a central clump before arching gracefully out and down with a waterfall effect. In mid-to-late summer, slender stalks rise above the foliage and bear delicate, airy flower panicles that give off a subtle coriander-like perfume. Next come its namesake seeds that shimmer in the breeze, dropping to the ground when mature and providing food for songbirds. The foliage turns a beautiful golden color in the fall and oftenmaintains its shape through the winter, providing year-round interest. This tidy grass will not spread or self-seed, is low-maintenance and drought-tolerant. Resistant to grazing. Thrives in all but the wettest soils, even in the presence of juglone.
