Solidago rigida- Stiff Goldenrod

Stiff Goldenrod has a commanding presence and earns its name with thick, tall, upright and unbranched stems that do not arch the way those of most goldenrods do. In the fall the stalks are crowned with flat-topped clusters of relatively large, bright yellow flowers that attract a plentiful and diverse array of pollinators at a time of year when pollen and nectar is scarce. Its pale green leaves are ovoid with rounded tips, clasp the stem with no petioles, and act as a food source for numerous beneficial insects. Its basal leaves are considered semi-evergreen and sometimes develop a rich red color when the weather turns cool. In ideal conditions this species is a prolific self-seeder and should be deadheaded if spreading is unwelcome.
