Virginia Bluebells are a delight to behold when they emerge in early spring not long after the ground has thawed, their broad leaves often a purple hue at first before settling into a soft green. A few weeks later, striking pink buds appear and then transform into beautiful downturned, bell-shaped flowers of a pale blue color. Bees, butterflies, skippers and moths flock to this early season source of nectar. Spreading gently via seed, a large colony can develop, blanketing the garden with color before most other plants have gotten going for the season. After its riotous early showing, this spring ephemeral’s leaves turn yellow and wither, going dormant until the following spring and leaving room for its garden neighbors to shine. Plant alongside summer and fall blooming plants for a dynamic showing all year long.
