Starry Solomon’s Plume has upright or gracefully arching stems that bear long, alternate, clasping elliptical leaves that have a beautiful ladder-like effect. In the spring, each stem terminates in a short raceme of delicate, white star-shaped flowers. These become unusual berries that call to mind a cat-eye: pale green with a pronounced vertical purple stripe. These berries ripen to a dark maroon color, providing multi-season visual interest. This native can tolerate full sun but its foliage may scorch at the height of summer. Partial shade is its preference. Can thrive in all but the wettest soils. Spreads readily via rhizome such that it can function as beautiful groundcover even in those tricky dry shade areas.
