Hibiscus moscheutos- Swamp Rose Mallow

Swamp Rose Mallow is an Illinois native whose large, captivating flowers have an almost tropical look about them. Blooms can be more than 6” inches in diameter, with five overlapping white or pale pink petals, a dark pink center and long white stamens. Individual flowers last only a few days but new blooms open in quick succession over many weeks from midsummer through early fall, attracting an array of winged visitors including Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds and the specialist Rose Mallow Bee. Its rich green foliage hosts several caterpillar species including that of the Painted Lady Butterfly. Spreading almost as wide as it is tall, this herbaceous perennial has a shrub-like appearance and can be cut back earlier in the season for a shorter, more dense form.
