Carex sprengelii-Long-beaked Sedge

Long-beaked Sedge wastes no time in early spring, quickly sending up flower stalks that rise above its upright and arching leaves to bear fluffy inflorescences of a pale yellow or green color. After pollination by the wind, these flowers ripen into seedheads that resemble shafts of wheat and nod downwards slightly to pleasing aesthetic effect. This early growth tends to flop over by early summer and can be chopped back while awaiting the fresh growth that replaces the old in short order. Its seeds provide food for songbirds, sometimes with a repeat showing in the fall, and its foliage provides habitat and food for beneficial insects. A wonderful addition to shady areas in a wide range of soil conditions.
