Carex lupulina- Common Hop Sedge

Common Hop Sedge is large and showy with an upright habit, forming dense fountain-shaped clumps of bright green leaves. Its spiky seed clusters are said to resemble the hop flower, providing visual interest for the viewer, along with food for a variety of animals. Its preference is for sun or light shade, but it can do well in full shade as long as the soil maintains consistent moisture. Tolerates flooding and is perfect for rain gardens and pond edges. A vigorous spreader when conditions are right.
