Carex bicknellii- Copper-Shouldered Oval Sedge

Copper-Shouldered Oval Sedge is named for the ovoid seed heads that start out a light green color in the spring and mature to a rich golden brown in the summer. These seed clusters top stalks that can reach up to three feet, rising well above the fine textured, grasslike leaves that typically do not exceed two feet. Its foliage provides food for several species of grasshopper and its seeds become food for birds. This tidy, non-spreading sedge does well in dry conditions and even periods of drought. Greens up while temperatures are still cool in the spring before warm season grasses hit their stride.
