Fringed Loosestrife charms the gardener with yellow, star-shaped blooms that dangle singly on long stalks sprouting from its upper leaf axils. While each bloom lasts only a few days, new blossoms open continuously for an extended bloom time of about a month and a half. This native has an upright growth habit, forms a 2ft wide clump, and can be found growing in all light conditions as long as the soil maintains adequate moisture. Spreads rhizomatically such that it can function well as a groundcover. Tolerates flooding.
Lysimachia species fill an important niche in the ecosystem as the sole producers of a floral oil that is essential in the lifecycle of native Macropis bees. These specialist bees collect the unique oil and mix it with pollen to feed their larvae. They also use it to waterproof their nests, protecting their developing young. Planting Fringed Loosestrife provides for these increasingly rare bees!
